So I was reading this article on Classic Rock and it went into detail on how the songs getting the most airplay on Classic Rock radio vary depending on the locale. For example, while Billy Joel is an airplay “heavy hitter” in New York, he gets significantly less airplay in other areas. That’s really not too surprising, is it?
What did take me a bit by surprise was when the article suggested that Classic Rock (as we presently know it, anyway) may eventually fade away. The suggestion was that as time moves on, tomorrow’s “Classic Rock” may be comprised only of today’s modern music and that when that day comes, few will care about what you and I today enjoy as Classic Rock. Now that’s a scary thought.
Will there really come a day when Boston’s More Than A Feeling and other Classic Rock staples that have long been considered “timeless”, become forgotten obscurities that get little to no airplay?
I doubt it. I think the reason why people are still listening to these songs today – already 3 decades after the song’s original release in many cases – is because these songs are timeless and thereby cross-generational by definition. There are many teens just now discovering a lot of these great songs thanks to musical video games such as Rockband and Guitar Hero, not to mention the popularity they have in new commercials. I’m sure you have been hearing some of the top 100 Classic Rock songs (and other retro hits) being used in commercials. Seems car makers are especially fond of these songs. 🙂 Combine that with the ease in discovering these tunes via Youtube. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched some 70’s or 80s music video and then scroll down through the comments and see someone chiming in with something along the lines of “Love this style of music…why can’t my generation create music this good?” and similar sentiments.
Plus, we have sites like this one that celebrate the retro sounds ranging from the mid-60’s through the 80’s which only further promote the genre by creating a community of fans who enjoy these fantastic songs (and their often equally entertaining music videos!). They sure did a good job in this performance, didn’t they?…
